Mission Statement:
The University of Texas at Tyler Texas
Regional Collaborative (UT Tyler TRC-Math) is committed to
disseminating scientifically based
professional development training and developing
communities of mathematics educators related to content and
pedagogical issues in mathematics education.
History:
The University of Texas at Tyler Texas
Regional Collaborative in Mathematics (UT Tyler TRC-Math)
began in 2007 with funding through the UT Austin Texas
Regional Collaboratives (TRC). Over the last three years,
the UT Tyler TRC-Math has provided state-of-the-art
professional development training to local and regional
schools and school districts, establishing us as one of the
leaders in K-12 mathematics education in East Texas. Since
our inception, we have improved teacher content knowledge
and positively influenced pedagogical practices of teachers,
which has translated into positive improvements in student
achievement. Through our partnership with public and private
schools and school districts, our 2010-2011 goals focus on
improving teacher content knowledge, improving teacher
instructional practices, and improving student achievement.
Collaborative Goals:
There are three primary goals of UT Tyler TRC-Math. The
first is to improve the specialized content knowledge of our
Mathematics Teacher Mentors (MTMs) related to the content
strands of algebra and geometry. The second is to positively
influence the teaching practices of our MTMs related to the
cognitive demand of instruction. The third is for increased
student performance in collaborative teachers' classrooms.
2010-2011 Grant Program:
Each MTM begins their program with 30
hours of summer training centered on content knowledge and
fostering algebraic and geometric thinking. Teachers are
then provided with nearly 40 hours of follow-up training and
discussion during the academic year centered on research
based instructional practices. They complete their training
with almost 15 hours of professional development during a
summer conference where they share their own highlights and
learn from other’s in teaching during the academic year.
Overall, MTMs will receive over 85 contact hours of
professional development through the UT Tyler TRC-Math,
conducting at least 12 hours of individualized mentoring
with their peers. Throughout the summer and academic year,
we at the UT Tyler TRC-Math will also conduct Saturday,
evening, and some weekday trainings for at least 150 Cadre
Members (CMs). These CMs will receive an average of 12
contact hours throughout the grant period.
There are two primary MTM groups to receive training during the 2010-2011 grant period: 3rd-5th grade teachers focusing on Fostering Algebraic Thinking and 8th-12th grade teachers focusing on Fostering Geometric Thinking. Teachers in 6th and 7th grade can choose to participate in either group. The Schedule of Trainings for BOTH groups.
