Mission Statement:
The University of Texas at Tyler Teachers of
Mathematics Collaborative (UT3MC) is committed to
conducting research, disseminating scientifically based
professional development training, and developing
communities of mathematics educators related to content and
pedagogical issues in mathematics education.
History:
Our collaborative began in 2007 with our
first year of funding through a UT Austin Texas Regional
Collaborative (TRC) grant establishing the
UT Tyler TRC in
Mathematics.
This grant has given us the opportunity to
create partnerships and relationships with local school
districts and has established us as one of the leaders in
providing state-of-the-art professional development training
to K-12 mathematics teachers in East Texas. In 2009, UT3MC
expanded its reach by receiving funding through the Texas
Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) Teacher Quality
Program (TQP). Our two-year
UT Tyler TQP in
Mathematics grant has allowed us to establish a strong
research based professional development program that hopes
to improve teacher content knowledge, teacher pedagogical
skills, and student achievement. In the fall of 2009, UT3MC
received funding through the
College and
Career Readiness Initiative (CCRI)
to develop online training modules related to
teaching Algebra. UT3MC has received its most
recent funding through UT Austin's Beginning Teachers
Induction and Mentoring (BTIM) Program. The
UT Tyler BTIM
Program in Mathematics is committed to giving first and second year
teachers of mathematics mentoring training that will
hopefully keep these vitally important educators in the
classroom and improve their mathematics instruction at the
same time. Since our inception, we have been committed to
our mission statement. External funding has allowed us to
expand and provide the necessary training we deem important
to improving mathematics instruction at the K-12 level.
Throughout all of our endeavors, we have partnered closely
with the East Texas Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) Center. Through this partnership, we have
been able to supplement our program and improve all that we
undertake. Our
UT3MC STEM activities have attempted to
showcase the connection mathematics has to other science
related fields and emphasize the importance of STEM
education.
