Secondary Teaching Specialization
This section describes the two ways that one can become certified to teach secondary mathematics. Briefly, the first way is to complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics (secondary certification) as described above. The second way is to have mathematics as the second of two teaching specializations (meaning that you would major in some field different from mathematics). The requirements for this second way are outlined below:
High School Preparation and Prerequisites:
Students who have not completed this preparation may have additional courses as part of their curriculum.
University Requirements: You must complete the core curriculum (47 hours) as specified in the university catalog.
Mathematics Requirements: Each of the following items must be observed:
You must pass all required mathematics classes (specified below) with a grade of C or better.
You must complete a minimum of 9 credit hours of mathematics at this university.
You must take all of the following classes:
| Course Number | Course Name | Credit Hours |
| MATH 2413 | Calculus I | 4 |
| MATH 2414 | Calculus II | 4 |
| MATH 3425 | Foundations of Mathemtics | 4 |
| MATH 3345 | Introduction to Analysis | 3 |
| MATH 3365 | Geometric Systems | 3 |
| COSC 3308 | Personal Computing | 3 |
| MATH 3380* | Algorithms in Applied Mathematics | 3 |
| Approved Mathematics Electives | 6 | |
| Total -- 30 hours |
* Note: MATH 3380 has prerequisites COSC 3308 (Personal Computing) and either MATH 4330 or MATH 2413 (Calculus I).
