2007 REU Program

The REU program is currently underway.  This year's participants in the program are Terrell Fenner, Laura Strube, and Lowell Trott.  These undergraduates are participating in mathematics research projects including the topics of Group theory, Knot theory, and Tiling theory.  The program is being mentored by Kazem Mahdavi, Jennifer McLoud-Mann, and Casey Mann.  Please click on the link to view all of the photos from our 2007 REU program.

We say "Farewell" to an outstanding Professor

Dr. Dick Mitchell is retiring after 35 years of service in The University of Texas System.  He served 20 years on the UT Tyler faculty and 15 years on the UT Arlington faculty.  He has been a leader in the department, a colleague, and a friend.  He was instrumental in contributing to the growth and development of high quality undergraduate and graduate mathematics programs in the Department of Mathematics.  He will be greatly missed.   We wish him the very best in his retirement.

Thank you, Dr. Mitchell!

Another Year - Another Cranford Scholar added to the list

Aaron Mauk was added to the list of Cranford Scholar's for the 2006-2007 year.  A committee was set up to evaluate each Math major senior.  A certain criteria had to be met and Aaron was the top Math major to meet the criteria.  For this recognition, his named was engraved on a plaque that is placed in the Mathematics department, and he also received a check in the amount of $50.00.  Congratulations, Aaron!!

Majors Travel to MAA Texas Sectional Meeting

A group of mathematics majors took a road trip to U.T. Pan American - Edinburg, Tx in April 2007 to attend the MAA Texas sectional meeting.

At the conference students listened to talks given by both undergraduate students as well as faculty on their research.  The students attended a pizza party and won many prizes.  For more pictures, visit the math club's webpage.

Mathematics students attend the second annual Texas Undergraduate Mathematics Conference

Mathematic students from UT Tyler attended the second annual Texas Undergraduate Mathematics Conference held at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville on October 21, 2006.  Students in attendance include Candace Andrews, Rachael Nolan, and Shaun Williams.  Three papers were presented at this conference from work completed last summer in UT Tyler's REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) summer program.

Shaun, Candace, Jahn

Shaun Williams, a mathematics and computer science double major, presented n-Colorings of Twist Knots mentored by Dr. Jennifer McLoud-Mann.

Jahn Veach, a mathematics major at UT Austin, presented Squaring the Square and Other Related Shapes under the direction of Dr. Casey Mann.
Candace Andrews, a mathematics major on campus, presented Finite C-groups under the direction of Dr. Kazem Mahdavi.

The mathematics faculty and students would like to recognize these students for their hard work both this past summer and for their continuing effort to share their research experiences with others.  In the spring semester, we encourage other students to apply for the REU program for Summer 2007.

To Bee Or Not to Bee - The Latest on the Integration Bee

On  March 29, the MAA chapter at UT Tyler held their Fifth Annual Integration Bee.  The majority of contestants were students majoring in mathematics, engineering, chemistry, and computer science.  The winners were

1st place:  Justin McCaslin (right)

2nd place:  Jennifer Williams (center)

3rd place:  Shaun Williams (left)

The winners were awarded various gift certificates from Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, and Target as well as new math club t-shirts!  Participants were eligible to receive door prizes from the math club.  More pictures can be found on the math club's webpage.

Do you want to be a part of the next Integration Bee?  Contact Dr. McLoud or Dr. Culshaw for details!

Award Winning Jenny Tompkins
Jenny's talk "How Knot Theory and DNA do the Tangle" was awarded 2nd place in the oral presentation category at the LSAMP conference in September, 2005.  In addition, Jenny took home a prize for being amongst the outstanding presenters at the MAA Texas sectional meeting in Wichita Falls in April 2006.  Her talk was a product of her summer research project involving the use of knot theory to understand the action of enzymes on DNA in cellular functions.  This summer project was funded by a grant from LSAMP.  Jenny's faculty advisors for this project were Dr. Jennifer McLoud and Dr. Casey Mann.  Way to go, Jenny!

Jenny is currently enrolled at UT Arlington and is pursuing her Master's degree.

UT Tyler Math Department Professor Receives Teaching Award

Dr. Jennifer McLoud's outstanding efforts on behalf of the students, both in and out of the classroom, were acknowledged at the 2005 Convocation when she was awarded the well-deserved UT Tyler's White Fellowship for Teaching Excellence 2005-2006.  In addition to a financial award, this carries with it the added honor of being the UT Tyler Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation 2005-2006 Excellence in Teaching Nominee.  Dr. McLoud - we salute you!

UT Tyler Math Department Celebrates Sonya Kovalevski Day

The University of Texas at Tyler math department has begun a new tradition: an annual workshop celebrating the life and influential work of Sonya Kovalevski, the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics.   Local high school girls from public, private and home schools, especially juniors and seniors, and their teachers are invited to learn about mathematics, its applications and the rich history of women’s involvement in mathematics.   Generally women are underrepresented in mathematically oriented careers. We want to expand the participants’ awareness of the many and varied ways mathematics is used in our daily world and the many careers generated as a result.

The day consists of exploring fun math topics and discussing careers in mathematics. The keynote speaker in the first celebration was Dr. Evelyn Granville, who was one of the first African-American women to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics and a former faculty member of UTT. Other speakers included UT Tyler math professors, graduate and undergraduate students as well as women from various mathematical careers.  Some titles of talks were: Human Knots, Fractalicious, and How a Leopard Gets His Spots.

The date for the next Sonia Kovalevski Day is Thursday, April 26, 2007.  For more information please contact Dr. Ranalli at rranalli@uttyler.edu or Dr. Culshaw at rculshaw@uttyler.edu.   The UT Tyler Math Department, the Association of Women in Mathematics and the National Security Agency have been past sponsors of the event.

Where Have All Our Graduates Gone?

We've gotten word that Shane Chambless, Duane Petty, and Sheila Thurmond  have all accepted teaching positions.  Scarlet Worthen Ellis, Lesley Wilson, and Fatima Jaafari are working in industry.  Ben McCarty and Will Grillette are pursuing PhDs in mathematics at LSU and UNL respectively.  Congrats to everyone!  If you are an alumni, then let us know what you are doing.  We'd like to keep up with everyone.
