The Department of Mathematics offers programs of study leading the the
Bachelor of Science in
Mathematics,
Bachelor of Science in Mathematitcs with Teacher Certification, and the
Master of Science in
Mathematics. This department is committed to a high quality of
teaching that will prepare our students for future careers in industry and in
academia. The Department of Mathematics faculty are also committed to
continuing our current research and developing new research as a means of
furthering the science, keeping ourselves abreast of new developments, and for
sharing this knowledge with our undergraduate and graduate students.
The Department of Mathematics currently consists of eight full-time tenured
and tenure-track Ph.D. faculty. The department has undergone rapid growth
in recent years along with the rest of the university (more about this at
http://www.uttyler.edu/mainsite/about.html). The faculty are actively
involved in mathematical research in the areas of algebra, geometry,
cryptography, mathematical biology, and other related areas of mathematics.
There is also much involvement by the faculty in the preparation of secondary
teachers with their work on the Teacher Quality Grant. We feel that it is
important that students participate in research and creative endeavors, and
several faculty are working with undergraduate and graduate students on research
projects and theses. As the university continues to grow at its current
phenomenal rate, we anticipate that these activities will likewise grow and
flourish.

Our former students have gone on to success as educators, business people, actuaries, college professors, and other exciting fields. This list of careers is hardly complete, however, for mathematicians are often hired in unexpected fields for their analytical and problem solving abilities. A math major's choice of minor area of study can give some direction in their career opportunities (e.g. a mathematician interested in actuarial/business fields might minor in business). Below are several common career options for mathematicians. The AMS has a web site about careers in mathematics -- click here for that page.
